2019 CLPINZ Workshop
20 - 21 August 2019, Crowne Plaza Christchurch
On behalf of the Competition Law and Policy Institute of New Zealand, I am delighted to advise that the 30th anniversary workshop of the Competition Law and Policy Institute of New Zealand will take place at the Crowne Plaza hotel in Christchurch on Friday 20 September - Saturday 21 September 2019. The first annual workshop of the Institute in 1989 took place in Christchurch and we felt that it was important to bring the anniversary workshop back to its place of birth, giving us the ability to showcase the beautiful city that is again ready for visitors. If you have not been to Christchurch for a while, you will be in for a treat!
The keynote speaker of our anniversary workshop is Dr. David S. Evans, who is the Chairman of the Global Economics Group, based in Boston. Dr. Evans also has positions at the University of Chicago Law School as well as University College London where he teaches Economics. He is the Editor-in-chief of Competition Policy International and the CPI Antitrust Chronicles and is on the editorial boards of Concurrences and The Review of Network Economics. David S. Evan has worked on competition matters in the US, the EU, China, Brazil and Australia amongst other jurisdictions and has provided economic advice on many industries. He is one of the world's leading authorities on platform-based businesses in two-sided markets, which is the broad area of his keynote speech.
Other sessions will cover a range of interesting and topical issues, including lessons learned from recent decisions on merger clearances and authorisations, current issues in the regulation of the electricity sector, the use of lay members in court, unsubstantiated representations in consumer law, cartel criminalization and cutting-edge economic tools in competition cases. We have so far confirmed as speakers Chris Whelan from RBB Economics, Sarah Keene and Sam Holmes from Russell McVeagh, Professor Martin Richardson from ANU, Alysha McClintock from Meredith Connell and Nick McHugh from Norton Rose Fulbright. We are very excited about the programme and hope that there is something for everyone!
The workshop dinner will take place in the stunning Christchurch Club that is an easy walking distance from the conference venue. The price of the dinner includes a 3-course menu with wines. We are confident that you will enjoy the dinner if you choose to join us!
We have negotiated a discount code for our delegates if you wish to book a room in the recently-opened Crowne Plaza Hotel, the venue of the workshop. The full workshop programme and details of how to register and book a hotel room will be announced shortly.
We look forward to seeing you in September!
